Outcomes from the first “Youth” Lemnian Brotherhood (YLB):
This meeting was held prior to the meeting to be held on the 19th of November 2008.
· The main goals that were identified are:
o Networking
o Going live
o Contributing to the Built Environment
· It was further decided “local is lekker”; the focus of the YLB will mainly concentrate on the local context. Helping the immediate Lemnian, Greek and South African community. Once the YLB felt it had satisfied its local commitment, it would look at contributing abroad.
· No Replacement Members have been voted in. It was felt that a mentorship program would be more appealing. Rather than younger members replacing current members, the younger member would shadow the mentor until such time all necessary skills had been transferred.
· Main Goals
o
Networking:
§ The YLB felt that increasing the amount of younger Lemnian’s is integral in sustaining the Brotherhood. A new membership fee will be decided and membership “Tokens” be created. For example the tokens could include a “Limnos Island” key ring, a member’s newsletter and other benefits.
§ If one considers the following: The years it took to reach a market audience of 50 million:
· Radio 38 years
· TV 13 years
· Internet 4 years
· Facebook 2 years
It had thus been decided a Facebook group be set-up. The aim is to spark interest and awareness on a platform which is exponential and will have no cost implications. Through this medium the YLB will be able to promote the brotherhood and any other information the YLB wishes to market.
§ With information gathered from the Facebook group, a database of emails will hopefully be created. Using this database a newsletter will be compiled and distributed to every member every 2-3 months.
o
Going-Live
§ A new facet to the Brotherhood will be introduced, the web. This will be done through Google Apps at a cost of $10.00 a year for a registered domain. This is an application is used by most NGO’s and will facilitate the website and email.
§ A website will be constructed and be maintained by the YLB. The website will be used for the following:
· For users to be able to access any information about the Brotherhood, eg: The Constitution, physical address, contact details, a email address etc
· For the YLB to promote any events it wishes to hold.
· To post photo’s and other items from past events.
· To enable easy access to the Brotherhood.
o Each member of the YLB and the current Brotherhood will receive a email address.
· The available domain names are:
o www.lemnianbrotherhoodsa.com
·
Contributing to the Built Environment
o It was felt the YLB needed a “bigger picture” or a “game plan”. A goal that could eventually contribute to creating something tangible that could serve the brotherhood, the Greek community and the South African community. It was thus decided the “game plan” is to eventually BUILD.
· Initial Cocnept
o An in initial concept was to create a 5 or 7 a-side soccer pitch. This concept has given rise to creating a M.U.G.A. This would be a “Multi Use Games Area” (M.U.G.A) situated on the ground of the Germiston Church. It would be a structure given to the community by the Lemnian Brotherhood,
o The initiative to raise funds will be coined “Get the Ball Rolling.”, with the idea of creating an games area for casual or formal events.
o A plan can be drawn which would govern how the scheme could generate income to go towards both its maintenance and for the generation of profit for the brotherhood.
